These terms govern your use of Firearm Owner SA (“the app”), published by Eks. By installing or using the app you agree to them. If you do not agree, please uninstall it. Contact: Ekspeace@gmail.com.

1. What the app is

Firearm Owner SA is an independent study aid for people working towards a firearm competency certificate and a firearm licence in South Africa. It contains practice questions written from the published Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000 and from the assessment criteria registered with SAQA for the relevant unit standards, together with a walkthrough of the ownership process and a reference section.

2. What the app is not

Not a government app. We do not represent the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Professional Firearms Trainers Council (PFTC), the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), any accredited training provider, or any government entity, regulator or examination body. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or accredited by any of them. The app provides and facilitates no government service: you cannot use it to apply for a competency certificate or a licence, to book training, or to contact SAPS.
Not accredited training, and it issues no certificate. Only a provider accredited for the relevant unit standards can assess you, and only SAPS can issue a competency certificate or a licence. Nothing you do in this app counts towards either.
Not legal advice. Whether a particular use of a firearm is lawful depends on the facts and is a question for a legal practitioner. The app will not answer it for your situation, and you must not treat anything in it as advice on your own case.

3. Safe handling — read this

The app contains questions about safe handling, loading and unloading, malfunctions, range procedure and the storage of firearms, ammunition and black powder. That material exists to help you prepare for a written paper.

Never learn to handle a firearm from an app. Practical firearm handling must be taught and supervised in person by an accredited instructor. Where this app and your instructor, your range’s rules, or the firearm manufacturer’s instructions differ, follow the instructor, the range or the manufacturer — not the app.

Explosives, propellants and percussion caps are separately regulated and dangerous. Confirm current requirements with the relevant authority before acquiring, storing or transporting them.

4. Accuracy, and the limits of it

We take accuracy seriously. Every answer names the provision or criterion it comes from so that you can check it against the source yourself, and the underlying material is public and free.

Even so, legislation changes, unit standards are re-registered or replaced, and administrative practice varies between police stations and providers. The app may contain errors or may be out of date. It is your responsibility to confirm anything that matters against the Act itself, the registered unit standard, your training provider, or the relevant authority.

If you find something wrong, please tell us at Ekspeace@gmail.com. Corrections are the most useful thing you can send.

5. No guarantee of a result

Using this app does not guarantee that you will pass any assessment or that any application will be granted. Readiness figures, scores and progress indicators shown in the app are study tools only. They are not predictions of your result, and they are not the marking standard your provider will use — ask your provider what their pass mark is.

6. Advertising

The app is free and funded by advertising served through Google AdMob. Studying, the reference section and reviewing your mistakes are never placed behind an ad. Additional timed exam simulations beyond a small daily allowance can be unlocked by choosing to watch a short video.

We do not control the content of the adverts shown. See the Privacy Policy for what advertising involves.

7. Acceptable use

The app’s text and design remain ours. The Firearms Control Act, the regulations and the registered unit standards are public documents published by the State and its agencies, and are not ours.

8. Availability

The app is provided as-is and as-available. We may change, suspend or discontinue it, or any feature of it, at any time. Optional online features may be unavailable.

9. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, and without limiting any right you have under the Consumer Protection Act, 2008 that cannot lawfully be excluded, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of, or reliance on, the app — including a failed assessment, a refused application, or any consequence of relying on the app rather than on the Act, an accredited instructor, or a legal practitioner.

10. Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of the Republic of South Africa.

11. Changes to these terms

If these terms change, the date at the top of the page changes with them. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept the revised terms.
