In short
- Your questions, answers, marks and settings stay on your phone.
- There are no accounts. We never ask for your name, email, ID number or phone number.
- Data leaves your phone only through Google's advertising.
- We don't sell your data or keep a profile of you.
- The app works with no connection at all; only the adverts need one.
Who we are
Matric Ace ("the app", "we", "us") is published by Ekspeace. Contact us at ekspeace@gmail.com.
Matric Ace is an independent study aid. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the Department of Basic Education or the IEB, and it does not issue results or certificates.
What data is used, and why
| Data | Where it goes | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your answers, marks, which questions you have seen, your grade, daily goal, streak, reminder time, exam dates and text size | Stored only on your device | To mark your work, show your daily goal and streak, keep giving you questions you have not seen, and count down to your exams |
| Advertising ID, device information, and the approximate location Google derives from your IP address | Google AdMob | To choose and measure the adverts that pay for the app, and to prevent advert fraud |
That is the whole list. There is no analytics library, no crash reporter and no server of our own: we never see your work or your progress.
Advertising
Matric Ace is free and funded by ads from Google AdMob: a banner, a full-screen advert when you hand in a paper, and an optional rewarded video you can choose to watch before a paper. Google may collect and use device information and your advertising ID to show and measure ads, as described in Google's Privacy Policy and how Google uses information from apps that use its services.
Consent. Where the law requires it (for example in the EEA and UK), the app shows Google's consent message before any ads are requested, and Settings > Advert privacy options lets you change your choice at any time.
What may be shown. The audience is school learners, so the app caps adverts at a teen content rating.
You can reset or delete your advertising ID, or opt out of personalised ads, in your phone's settings (Android: Settings > Privacy > Ads).
Permissions
- Internet: used only to fetch adverts. The question bank, the marking and your progress are all on the device.
- Notifications: only for the daily practice reminder, and only if you turn it on.
- Run at start-up: so a reminder you have set survives a phone restart. It is used for nothing else.
- Vibrate: used by that notification when your phone is set to vibrate.
Links to other websites
The app names the official documents it is built from, such as the CAPS documents and the Grade 12 Examination Guidelines, but it cannot open a link: there is no browser anywhere in Matric Ace. The addresses of those documents appear in the Play Store listing, where opening one takes you to the Department of Basic Education's website, whose own privacy practices apply.
Young users
Matric Ace is made for high school learners in Grades 10 to 12, so its audience is 13 and older. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect anything from a child under 13.
Keeping and deleting your data
- Everything the app saves stays on your device until you clear the app's data in your phone's settings, or uninstall the app. Both delete all of it, and we cannot recover it, because we never had it.
- Data sent over the internet by the advertising SDK is encrypted in transit (HTTPS).
Your rights
Under South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), and laws such as the GDPR where they apply, you may ask to access, correct or delete personal information, object to processing, or withdraw consent. Because we hold no accounts or profiles, most requests are handled by clearing the app's data or uninstalling, but you can always contact ekspeace@gmail.com. You may also lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator.
Changes to this policy
If we change what the app does with data, we will update this page and the "Last updated" date above.
